Apple store told me to just buy a new one

genuinely furious when I left the Genius Bar. the guy basically shrugged and said water damage plus a software issue was "too complicated" and that I should look at upgrade options. I was literally shaking

ok so I know that sounds dramatic but hear me out. my phone died the morning of my sister's wedding. like completely dead. I was the one holding all the vendor contacts, the timeline, the everything. My iPhone X was my late husband's. I was not replacing it.

I want to explain why a phone that's almost 8 years old matters enough to write a review about. my husband passed away two years ago and I've been using his iPhone X since then. I know that sounds strange but it still has his voice memos on it, some videos, little things. it froze completely about six weeks ago and I was sick with worry. Apple told me the device was old and parts were limited. I found Gbytesoft and I honestly didn't care how much it cost at that point. it worked. everything was still there. I cried for about 20 minutes after. I'm leaving this review so other people in a similar situation know this option exists.

Took longer than newer phones but it got there

I use my 8 Plus as a dedicated music and podcast device — it lives in my kitchen permanently and I've never had a reason to replace it. it crashed after an iOS 16 update and got stuck in a loop. ran Gbytesoft and it did eventually work, but I want to flag: the whole process took nearly 1h including firmware download. I think older firmware versions just take longer to pull. it's not a complaint exactly — it worked — but if you're doing this on an older device, set aside an hour and don't watch the screen the whole time. you'll stress yourself out. get a cup of tea and come back.
